Valid H1 status??

I have a valid H1 until 2003. we have applied fo 485 with my wife as primary applicant. My H1 stamp on the passport is expired. Can I travel without Advance Parole and get my passport stamped in mumbai and return on H1.

I did it on Dec 2001. After filing I-485, I got my H-1B in Beijing and come back to US with no problem.
