I am a US permanent resident since July 2003 with
China nationality. I moved to Toronto, Canada in
August 2005 and work as a postdoctoral fellow in
University of Toronto. I have filed Canadian tax
return for the year to date income I earned in 2005.
The income source I got in Canada is
scholarship/fellowship and reflected as other income
in line 28 of T4A slip. The tax preparer told me that
under the tax treaty between China and Canada, my
income here is totally exempted from canadian tax.
Right now I am preparing my US tax return. There are a
few questions coming up. How should I claim the
sholarship/fellowship I received in Canada for my US
tax return? Are they taxable income? Before I moved to
Canada I was a Ph. D. student in US and received
predoctoral scholarship/fellowship , which was
reported on 1042-S form and usually exempted from US
tax under the tax treaty between China and US. But
this year the school didn't issue me either 1042-S or
W-2 and asked me use my last paycheck stub for tax
return. I am not sure if my income is still tax
exempted as usual.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
