US passport question for kids

Hi,

We recently got our citizenship. I am thinking to apply for passport for my son who is 10 years old now. I have following questions in this regard.

1. I do not want to apply N600 for him. But I need to change his name. How do I do that ?

2. He has GC and living with us. But he does not have a SSN. I think I need SSN for appying for his US passport ? If I apply for SSN for him, what name I have to use for this process, new name or old name ?

3. Do I need to notarize my child's birth certificate which is from India ?

I really appreciate any answers to these questions.

Thanks

Please don't take my answer as definitive, as they are really just suggestions where to start.

Name change: you'll most likely need to run this through the local court system as it is a legal name change. Check with your local courthouse for details. Get this sorted out first, before applying for either SSN or passport.

SSN: probably not required for the passport, but a good idea to get one, as he'll need soon enough anyway.

Birth cert: I don't know for sure whether you'll need it notarized, but you'll definitely need to send it to the State Dept when you apply for the passport because its the only way to prove he's your son and therefore a citizen.

1. N600 is better, it never expires. To change name without N600 you have to get a court order. Every state has a different procedure. Here is a link for process in texas.

2. You can apply for SS card with Green Card under old name, or take the court order and apply for new name.

3. If the child's birth certificate is in english, it does not need to be notarized.

boatbod is Correct.

If your son is 10 and you have been an LPR for at least 5 years, how have you been listing him on your tax return if he doesn't have an SSN? You can't take a deduction for a kid over 2 years old without an SSN.

Name Change

Has anyone changed the name for kids in TX. I can see the link for the form but was wondering if we need a lawyer or a paralegal to help out. Thanks for the help.
