US News:White House Week

Move to the right ..

The latest US News Magazine states that a leaked report from the White House shows Bush has done a complete 180 degree turn in lieu of the falling support with the right.
The report says enforcement will be much tougher and each illegal pays 10,000$ one time fee for a Green Card for himself and his family.

Bush's move to the right with respect to immigration shows a growing game of politics that is going on in DC. Almost every issue is being divided along party lines and immigration being such a hot button issue finds itself bang in the middle of partisan politics. For the longest time, Bush was aligned more with Dems than Repbs with respect to immigration reform but his recent move to align himself with the right by pushing more enforcement provisions shows that he is either getting desperate for support from his base or is playing his last hand in order to get some sort of immigration bill passed. I guess the White House has come to the conclusion that the CIR in its current form will not make it to law. The new bill that has been leaked to the media is a last ditch attempt to gain Republican support. With so many bills being introduced (CIR, STRIVE, the White House bill and now the new H1 bill), there is way to much confusion out there. Who knows which one (if any) will make it through. This summer will be crucial.

The bottom line is Reps and Dems both want to get money from the corporations and also get credit from voters. Good for immigration. All this talk about $10k etc is to get Reps sitting on the fence to vote for the CIR/STRIVE.
The only people affected by the delay are legals though. Don't think illegals care to get citizenship if they are not criminalized. No wonder only half of the qualified people (for citizenship) who were given amnesty in the last round in the ninties have applied for citizenship...

30 degree, maybe.

I would say that he has done a 30 degree turn. I believe that this news of 180 degrees is just an attempt to make people believe that Pres. Bush has changed his mind, when in reality his intentions of amnesty remain.

The immigration reduction crowd already announced STRIKE as an amnesty which proposes higher fees and ask the head of the household to step outside for a day and return home.

While they keep pushing for amnesties, that won't have the public support I am afraid.

Perhaps he can change the law and I can just pay 10,000$, to get my Green Card. I bet if he put that offer on the table to Legals trying to get Green cards, many people would pay just to get through this process immediately.

Ahh, but you forget all the taxes legals pay. They stand to make a lot more of legals by maintaining status quo.

legals who are waiting for Gc maybe around 200k

illegals......around 12 million.....far too bigger than legals..

and of course...for the business....12 million cheap labors..whereas legals like us demand better/equal pay compared to citizens...

for the politicians....12 million new votes....

in the end nothing matters but the american pop-culture loving public....based on whose opinion politicians change their color every day.... (or whose opinion they try to influence through propaganda)

if american public thinks immigration is bad.....thats it.....everyone out the door....it does not matter if you are a highly paid professional.......or a illegal with a criminal background...

so lets wait and see how many twists and turns....and what kind of number shows up for us in this game of dice...

The tax is the same whether GC\H1b.GC holder due to job mobility can command more money (and hence more tax revenue) than H1b stuck with the same employer and in the same position waiting for GC.
If a dem president and dem-controlled house and senate pass amensty bill, they will surely benefit as illegals will most likely vote for dems after becoming citizens. The truth may be that american citizens no longer want any en-masse amnesty bill and hence any immigration bill may not make it. Similarly, H1b has got bad name and any effort at increasing the numbers of H1b will see lot of opposition from the people. GC quota is tied to both the above and hence we may not see any reforms with respect to this issue; although this may be the least controversial.

tusharvk,

I agree with you and techy. As you rightly said, a few thousand legal immigrants whose immigration process has been delayed by a few years just does not compare to the 12-13 million illegal immigrant issue. The problem is that this whole immigration issue is being used by different law makers for different purposes. A lot of anti-immigrants (those that oppose all kinds of immigration) are skillfully using different facets of this debate to further their ultimate agenda that is centered around no-progress. They do not want any sort of immigration reform bill (legal or illegal) to be passed and hence the current situation is ideal for them.

The next few months will put this issue to rest till after the Presidential elections. If there is no bill by August then our next shot will be in '09.

You mean, 12-20 million.
I do not want to sound like negative, but like immigrationvoice or not, so far the immigration reduction agencies have been getting most predictions correctly in the last years. This is what has been issued today:

"from NumbersUSA, 04/12/07:
...
way that Republican (and a lot of Democrats, too) Senators are trying to justify their support of the new White House amnesty. They claim that they oppose "blanket amnesties" and "automatic citizenship" for illegal aliens. Any time you hear a politician making those promises, you can almost be guaranteed that that politician is supporting an amnesty for illegal aliens.

Thankfully, it sounds like very few Arizona politicians were being fooled by the President. Matthew Benson of the Arizona Republic got these quotes:

"I heard him say the same ol’ thing he always does. It’s always all show, no substance. He’s a lame duck. He will not get anything accomplished. I’d stake my life on it.”
- Ray Borane, mayor of the Arizona border town of Douglas

..."

Agencies like NumbersUSA are exactly the kind that are taking advantage of the whole situation. They are plainly anti-immigrant and they do not care much about legals vs illegal. However, they realize that they can really put the brakes on all kinds of immigration by playing up the illegal immigration issue and drowning out the legal immigration issues.

As for Bush, he has become totally ineffective and with each passing day it seems that the situation gets worse for his administration. I am afraid his personal view on immigration does not hold much weight. If enough law makers feel that there will be some sort of political gain by working out an immigration bill, it will happen. It is not going to happen because there are legitimiate problems. That is the reality.

on the other hand, so many bills relating to immigration have recently been introduced, and as far as I can see only Sen. Durbin's bill is even somewhat negative.
Don't know how reliable Matthew Oh's website is, but they are reporting that Cornyn has reintroduced the Skil bill, and Hagel has introduced some bill relating to the "skilled worker crisis" - obvious knee-jerk reaction to H-1s being used up on first day.
Plus CIR - both Senate version and House version.

Certainly momentum seems to be there, and for legals, none of these bills are really negative.

Maybe wishful thinking, but I feel optimistic...
