US Green Card and Canadian PR

Hello Gurus,

I would like to know whether there is any negative impact on my US GC by getting a Canadian PR or vice versa.

I remember reading somewhere (don't know where) that once your Canadian PR approved you cannot take up Permanent Residency of any other country. If you become PR of any other country after Canadian PR, you will loose your Canadian PR. Is this correct?

I think I found a passage like this in a Canadian PR document or on a Canadian Govt. website.

Anyone with some info on this matter, please let me know.

Thanks

This issue only comes up once you have both US GC and Canada PR approved and in hand.
Technically youy can not be a Permanant Resident of 2 countries. However until you actually get US GC in hand then having Canadian PR shouldnmt have any adverse effect on you. Once you get US GC in hand you will have to choose between which one you want to keep.

Thanks texancanadian!

What if I get approval of both these by the end of this year. Can I still take advantage of 3 years (after landing) to settle in Canada, and work in the US for that time and then move to Canada for good?

I have seen postings in this forum by someone who already got his US GC and landed in Canada as PR without any problem. Is this possible?

- Yes, you can do that. But there are chances of you getting questions from the cdn immigration officers, if they see your US I-551 GC stamp in your passport. In that case you might jeopardize your cdn status.

- Yes, could be. But as I mentioned earlier, it depends on the immigration officer and whether he sees the US G.C. stamp...

Now, having said this and assuming you come back to Canada without any issues, there could still be a problem when you are ready to apply for the cdn citizenship. There is a CLEAR question on this citizenship form - "have you obtained a PR in any country after obtaining cdn PR"...You can clearly guess the intent behind this question. If you answer "Yes", you will certainly have to answer a lot of questions and defend your case. If you naswer "No", you will be lying and face a threat of losing your citizenship anytime in the future, if the truth surfaces...

Hope you find my response useful...

Thanks a lot!

I just want to keep my US GC for sometime to earn some money here in the US and then move to Canada for good. I am expecting a time frame of 2-3 years for this. I really don't want to miss-out on Canadian PR and want to use it, and ultimately to become citizen of Canada.

Thanks for your insight on this matter.
