US Citizenship Interview Experience

Hi,

I just wanted to share some info. on interview - maybe it will be useful to others.

1. I filed my application sometime around March 2004 (I don't have the exact dates handy, I can post them later if anyone is interested)

2. I got my interview letter about 2 months back and had my interview on Oct. 20th at Oakland, CA

3. The person who interviewed my was very casual, he asked me to take the oath and then went over the N-400 application form. They were all just a formality. He then went thro' my passport to make those dates match the ones on my passport. (I had make a typo at one place, he corrected it saying that is not a problem). He then asked me about 7 questions - all these questions were from the 100 questions which are on this Murthy site or USCIS website. Only thing make sure to find the names of the senators & governor of your state. For example, 2 of his questions were : Which president is called the "Father of our Country?" and Name the 2 senators of California. Also, he asked me to read a simple English sentence and also write a simple one. It was quite simple.

4. One thing which I wanted to do was change my name since my name is messed up in my GC but he said it will create a problem (I am not sure why this is so since I read name change is easy to do while getting the citizenship). Anyhow, I decided to stick to the same name till I get my Citizenship and then work on that part.

5. He then congratulated me saying I have passed, asked me to wait in the hall. I asked him about the FBI name check part - he said that has gone thro' fine. A few minutes later, another lady called me, congratulated, handed me an application form and said I should come to the Oath Ceremony on Nov. 2nd. That's it!

It was a very simple process. While waiting in the hall, I met another person who was coming for the 2nd time. (He is a truck driver and he was not fluent in English). He failed the first time since he could not understand what the interviewer was asking him. Most of people should not have this as a problem but just something I thought I should mention.

Hope this info. is useful, let me know if you need any more info.

Questions I have : 1) any idea how long the Oath ceremony takes up? 2) It mentions I should be dressed in proper attire, does it mean like a coat & tie? Any pointers appreciated.

Thanks.
