US Citizen sponsoring Wife (sponsor unemployed)

Hi,

My situation briefly is this:
I (sponsor/Us Citizen) have petitioned for my wife of 4 years to get her Green Card. We have recently received notice to attend the adjudication hearing at the local USCIS office for what will hopefully be the final outcome/result for her Green Card. I have been gainfully employed all throughout the process, however only recently I was laid off. I am now unemployed but obviously looking, but the question I have is will the INS/USCIS authorities freak out seeing how I the sponsor am now without work? I am able to collect unemployment and am for now until I find something. We have a child together so its not like a sham or anything. My only question and concern is what "their" policy is re: employment for sponsors etc - doesn't seem fair to neglect an application because obviously I will eventually find a job again and not to mention when the original I-485 application was submitted I was employed and provided all the supporting documentation.

Please respond if you have any experience with issues of this type. Thank you in advance. Also, please reply with any constructive ideas of what to say or bring with me for the hearing which is around the corner.

Your GC is not emplyment based so stop worrying too much. If you think about it, you could get laid off after your wife gets her GC. What do you think will happen? Will USCIS take away her GC just coz you lost your job. As long as you are financially ok and have been paying your taxes on time, thats all what matters.
I am sure you will be fine.

I believe you can use your other assets - such as equity in home or money in savings account - to meet the minimum required to sponsor. In addition, you can have a relative such as a parent or brother co-sponsor your wife with you. I believe being able to support the sponsored immigration is a requirement in the sponsorship process. Look at the affidavit you completed for who can co-sponsor with you - the instructions clearly provide details. In my opinion, it wouldn't hurt to attend your wife's interview with an updated affidavit of support form.

The poster is a US citizen and is sponsoring his spouse, so proof of income/ability to support is a requirement in the process. His wife does not yet have a greencard.

Thanks to everyone

Just to follow up to everyone's replies. First off, thanks to all who spoke to this I appreciate your input. I am a US citizen and yes you are correct re: the requirement to sponsor my wife financially. I had reviewed the requirement on the financial affidavit and what is sort of comical in a way is that even though I am collecting unemployment insurance benefits weekly until I find a place of employment - I remain above the poverty line as outlined by USCIS in order to remain qualified to sponsor my wife for her GC.
In other news, I finally found a job so I think we should be golden. Albeit, when it comes to government (any gov't), I wouldn't put anything past them -anythings possible.
