My mother was a US citizen by birth and gave birth to me outside the US. At the time of my birth my mother was not married. Based on the rules as I understand them I would qualify for citizenship automatically as she met the required one year residency and did not marry my biological father until after my birth. The US consulate official I spoke to however advised me that because I was “legitimized” by my biological father (even though it was after my birth) the stricter residency requirement applies, which my mother did not meet. Looking for any similar experiences. Would appreciate any thoughts on what my next step should be.
