US Asylee becoming Permanent Resident in Canada (Spousal Sponsorship)

Hi there.
I am a US asylee since August 2011 (my case was pending for 2 and 1/2 years). I recently obtained Canada Permanent Residency through my spouse and would like to know if before leaving the US for Canada I should surrender my asylum status here in the US. I have a RTD and haven't adjusted my status yet to LPR. Will I be able to keep my status in the US and renew my travel document or apply for Re-entry permit from Canada?
Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken you won't be able to keep the asyleee status in the US once you became a resident of Canada.

More details please

Hi nardoswiss.
Could you please give more details or the source of your information? The last thing I want to do is being in trouble with USCIS after all. I need to have if possible a link, or some official documentation I can look up or obtain to confirm your info!
Thanks.

PS: i know I can search the internet but its just I don't know what source to trust.

Hi,

First of all you can google the question. Second of all, take a deeper look on the USCIS website (I've seen this rules somewhere on the website). And finally ask yourself (or you can call to the USCIS support or any lawyer) what is the asylum status? The US government has provided you an option to stay in the US until you become a permanent resident (which means you change your status) or until the situation in your case is changed. And the US government would have never provided your a such status if you could get it from the third country. Now you are getting canadian "green card" you no longer need the asylum status in the US.

My advise - go to a lawyer, pay him for his time and explain the situation, as it might be very tricky in the future. And having problems with USCIS is a pretty bad thing. Or as I mentioned before - just call to the USCIS hotline and ask them.

Best,

NarsoSwiss
