Hi! I have a very urgent question with regards to my Social Security number application here in Santa Clara county, CA. My H1B1 (new & COS) was approved on June 13, 2003 and the notice of approval was mailed to me on the 27th of the same month as per BCIS online updates. I just applied for my Social Security number this morning, July 22, and I was surprised when the person in-charge told me that my H1B1 approval has not been updated yet in their database system. She gave me 2 options whether to submit my original documents to them, i.e. passport, I-94 with the approval notice, and birth certificate so they could send this out to the BCIS for further verification, which she said it would normally take for about 2 months to get the result or to wait for another 10 days to see if there is any changes in the system before they can process my application. I thought that once you have the approval notice from the BCIS with the valid I-94 and identifications of yourself, it would have been a lot easier then to get a SS number. I don't know what's wrong with the BCIS nowadays. It is already 6 weeks old since the approval date and they haven't updated their system yet. Does anybody experience the same problem I have? Any info, advice or suggestion on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot....

P.S.

My employer wants me to work A.S.A.P. :help :cry

You don't need SS number to begin your employment. Ask SSA office to give you a letter stating that you have applied for SS number. Use this letter if your employer asks.
You only need H1 approval to begin working.
It takes a few weeks to update BCIS computer systems.
In any case do not leave ORIGNAL documents with anyone, even SSA office. They should be able to work from copies if you show them the originals.

SSN

Hi nkm-oct23! Thank you so much for your quick reply. At least, by this time, I already know how to deal with it. It's just that I'm a little bit worried since it's already over a month old since the approval date of my H1B1 but the SSA system (linked from BCIS database) has not been updated yet. I'll update you and this forum once I get my SSN next week. Again, thanks a lot for your help.
