Hi,

Here's my friend's situation.

My friend is currently in India and she has got her GC approval and passport was stampped last year. Her I-551 stamp expires sometime soon. Her marriage is on the rocks. She was visiting India and because of family issues, she got stuck there. But, her husband is in the US.

Her questions are :
1. Can she travel to the US before her I-551 stamp expires?
2. Will she require a re-entry permit?
3. What questions can she anticipate at the POE?
4. If her husband is not with her, will it be a problem at the POE?
5. If at all, a divorce happens before and after she is in the US, what's her status?
6. What are the documents that she will need for travel other than her passport?

Thanks a lot.

Appreciate your time.

Her questions are :
1. Can she travel to the US before her I-551 stamp expires?
-generally,Yes
2. Will she require a re-entry permit?
-If she stayed more than 6 months, technically yes. But she can give some execuse because of some family situation. I let expreinced PR to comment
3. What questions can she anticipate at the POE?
-as noted in 2, officer may ask how long she has absent and reason for absense
4. If her husband is not with her, will it be a problem at the POE?
-No. Why ?. this is a free country. Her PR is not depending on her husband at all.
5. If at all, a divorce happens before and after she is in the US, what's her status?
-No impact on her status. The same answer as 4.
6. What are the documents that she will need for travel other than her passport?
-Valid Passport with valid stamp should be good enough
Thanks a lot.

Once her passport was stamped, she must have received the plastic card - The Green Card. If she has received it, can someone from US send her that card so that she can come in smoothly ?

someone can send it ofcourse, but dont u think its risky as chances of it getting lost are more.

fed ex it- then it is trackable and unlikely to get lost- this admittadly might cost money- but surely would be a better idea than her getting denied at POE.

and as for re-entry permit- this for longer than 12 months- if it is under 12, she is OK
