I’ll be leaving USA for my CP interview this week, and I have some questions for I-94:

1. When departing in airport, will my I-94 be taken off from my passport in airline check-in counter?
2. Actually my I-94 in passport has expired last month, but I have a new I-94 in my H1B transfer approval. Do I need to detach the new I-94 from the approval notice and attach it to my passport? And do I need to give both old and new I-94 to airline staff in check-in counter?
3. My P4 says “need I-94 and departure records in the CP interview”. If all I-94s are taken away in airport, do I just need to show copies of my I-94s to consulate officer in the interview?

Yes

You need to tear off the I94 from your H1 approval and attach it to your old I94 in the passport. Both of them will be retained by the airline.

Originals are always returned to the INS.. You need to have a copy of all your I94's as a part of your record. Similarly, plastic EAD's and AP's are taken away when 485's are approved and your plastic GC will be taken away when you naturalize.

All I-94's

What do you mean when you say All I-94's ? I have travelled to India thrice in the last 5 years. AllI have is the I-94 attached to my passport now. I did not make copies of my previous I-94's. How important is that? Is there a way to obtain copies of the previous I94's?

Confused and worried,

No worries, Srini

I'm currently having 2 I-94s, an old one in my passport, and a new one from my H1b transfer appoval. When I said "all I-94s" I mean these two.

I don't think we need to worry about those previous I-94s which had been taken away in airport. All you need to do is to make a copy of the I-94 you are having now. (In my case, I have 2 now.)

Caution ...

per my lawyer, we should not remove I-94 attached to H1B approvals, and let the INS/Consular officials do it themselves.

The idea being, the security infos inherent in the H1b document is preserved. And that I-94 is original. Eliminating a fraud possibility.
