Hi,

I would like to one important thing. My sister is going to get married to somebody who is having the following status:

Green Card (AS6)

What I understand is that he has the green card through the asylum process. can you please let me know how long it will take him to get my sister in USA or i would like to you know after he sponsor my sister how long it will take before she can be with him in USA. This is very important as we are going to take a decision about the marriage within a day or two. Thanks.

It makes no difference how a person secured the green card. As of right now, it takes more than FIVE YEARS to sponor spouses into this country. In other words, the State Department is now giving visas to people who applied in November 1997.

PS: I am sorry that the information above is probably not what you were hoping for. But this is the reality that permanent residents face these days.

Gilbert, I heard about an act that has been passed during the Clinton's Adminstration, which allows family reuniion for people who are waiting for their adjustment of status. Is it true? Does this mean that this bride can stay in the US until her turn comes?

It does not help. The provisions you mentioned only apply if the petition was filed with the INS before 2000 and the prospective immigrant has been on the visa line for at least three years. That law allows eligible people to come in to wait for their visas and work, but no other benefits. It is called the "V" nonimmigrant visa and you can go the INS website and read the fineprint.

Gilbert.

Thank you very much. I appreciate your reply. You are absolutely right that this is not the reply we were looking for. Thanks again.
