Urgent - Passport validity for extending visa

Hi,

My child's (dependant) passport is expiring in next six months, I have heard
that for applying an extension to the visa, the passport should be valid for more than one year.

I wish to know if this is true? Also I wish to know the rules for passport expiration and extension of visa.

Any urgent replies in this is highly appreciated.

Thanks

The passport must be valid for the entire stay in the U.S.

Currently the passport is valid, can I apply for extension of the visa now?
The passport is going to get expired in March 2006.

The rule is pretty clear.

If you want to extend your stay (based on nonimmigrant visa) only until the passport expiry date, yes.

If you want to extend your stay beyond your passport expiry date, you should first renew passport and then apply for extension of visa.

The passport is going to get expired in March 2006.
