My mother(widow) came on a visitor visa to US in August 2015. She was given 6 months and her return date was in Jan 2016. we applied for her green card on Dec 22nd (well before her visa date expiry). Her I-485 was approved on May 10th 2016. USCIS said that they would mail the permanent resident card (plastic green card) within 30-60 days time, ( by end of July 2016). She needs to travel to India on a emergency visit now. can she travel with her approved I-485 only and later on, on reciept of the permanent green card i (son) will courier it to India which she will use to return back to US after 5 months. can she travel out of country ? Will there be any issue at the airport when leaving US ? Greatly apprecaite your response to this.

She should go to an InfoPass appointment and get an I-551 stamp if possible before she leaves. There is never any issue with leaving the US (the US doesn't have exit checks; anyone is free to leave at any time); the issue is coming back. If her I-485 is really approved, then she is a permanent resident and leaving doesn't affect her status. If you can courier card to her, that would work but there is the risk of it getting lost.
