Hi,
My sister recently came from India on F1 visa. While she was coming from India the immigration officer took her original stamped I-20 . But when she went for SSN , they are asking for original I-20. Does anybody had this type of experience ? I called INS and they asked me to contact the airport where she arrived. I called the airport and the immigration people over their said they will keep the original I-20 with them. Please advice me on this.

Thanks,
KKR.

Usually the I-20 is supposed to be with the student. I dont know why they took it at the airport. Did they offer any explanation for that? She needs to have it on her person otherwise she cannot re-enter if she leaves the US. Contact the international students office at her school first and ask them what's going on. By the way, which airport/city was this?

Thanks for the reply. This was happened at JFK NY. And they also took her friend's I-20 who came with her same day. The school people said they'll issue a new I-20, but it won't have the stamp I guess.

Even I had a hard time with JFK immigration when i came. the officer wsa saying i opened the i-20 and i did fraud etc. He did the same to my cousin also(same person). I donno y they kept her i-20. Try to get it somehow as it is a very imp document. But contact ur internation office and tell them and check whether they can issue a new one without showing the financial statement. Moreover, does her have a copy of that by chance?or the student copy?

Not having the stamp on the I-20 should be fine. There are cases when new I-20's are issued while the student is in the US (e.g. going on for a PhD after finishing MS but the original I-20 only says MS degree, change of major etc). In such cases there is no stamp on the I-20. It is weird that they took the I-20 at JFK. Not heard of it before.
