My wife she lost her GC while she is in India.I saw ur site it is realy helpful. In addition to that, I have a question.

Her I485 got approved last april 2002 and her passport is got stamped with adjustment of status which is valid for 1 year (till april 2003).

Is it ok to use that stamping to get into US without going to local Consulate in India? Please let me know your suggestions. She is really in big confused status.

Your timely help is Appreciated.

From your FAQ:
"You can apply for a replacement of permanent resident card by filing an INS Form I-90.
For obtaining the said form call the INS Forms line at 1-800-870-3676 or request it online <"http://ww.ins.gov/graphics/formsfee/forms/index.htm">
File the application with supporting documentation and required fees in person at the local INS office serving the area where you live.
If you are outside the U.S. and have lost your alien registration card, contact the nearest American Consulate, INS Office or Port of entry before attempting to file a Form I-90.
If your Form I-90 application is approved, you will be mailed a replacement Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551) with a ten-year expiration date from the date of issuance. "

It is highly likely that the Officer

will ask why you don't have the physical card yet ( I know that would be a dumb question). But in your case you have to tell the truth or lie.
Just be aware of this possibility.

Also the likelyhood of special inspection increases with only a stamped passport.

Just my 2 cents

Just say you lost you rgreen card. It is nothing to be
ashamed of. The loss of the card is not a crime---
though make sure if there is a law that require timely
report of the loss.

Women always tend to lose stuff easily than men. They
have a habit of putting everything in a handbag and carry
that handbag with a loose and irresponsible attitude.
The handbag can be easily forgotten or snatched.

Chennai consulate has this to say:

***************************************************
Question: I lost my green card. What do I do now?

Answer:
Anyone having lost a Form I-551 (Green Card) may apply in our office for a Transportation Letter, a document that will allow the alien to board an airplane for return to the United States and to apply for admission at the port-of-entry in the U.S.
Those seeking Transportation Letters must come to our office Tuesday - Friday at 8:00 a.m., except for holidays and must bring the following:
>valid passport
>completed form I-90
>$120 (U.S. dollar) fee in Rupees or U.S. dollars
>evidence of Legal Permanent Resident status
>evidence of the date of your most recent departure from the United States
>four (4) identical photographs to be affixed to the letters
****************************************************

You may want ot give the nearest US consulate a call and ask them if it is OK for your wife to travel with previously issued temporary I-551 stamp.
