Urgent Info Needed About J1 Visa Renewal within US

My friend is working on J1 here, his visa stamp expired a month ago, but his J1 status has been extended. Now, if he goes back to india to visit his family, he will need to get a new visa stamp in passport before he can come back.

According to his information, it is taking 4 to 6 weeks to get visa stamped from india. He will most probably loose his job if he goes for that much time.

Is there any way he can get the new stamp from within US?

Any input will be highly appreciated.

No. For a new J-1 visa stamp, your friend has to go outside the US (Canad/Mexico/India..). If he goes outside the US and in a country other than India, make sure beforehand whether they stamp a third-country national.

For H-1B renewal (new stamp), it's possible while being in the US - but not J-1 unfortunately. This is according to the best of my information - I am not an immigration law expert/attorney.
