Hi All,

How much time it takes to get SSN for H1B guy entering first time in USA. I landed in USA on H1B visa frist time in 1st week of Jan .Apply for SSN 2nd week Jan. SSN office says that, you will get SSN in 1 to 2 months. Is that right ? Without SSN can I open driving licence.


Can any one advice what to do!

==> nowadays ssa issues ssn only after confirming the validity of the status. it may take anytime from 2 weeks to 4 months depending on when uscis update their system

different states have varying laws. if you reside in one of the very few states then you may be eligible for driver licence without ssn but would need to give affidavit (but as you are eligible for h1 you are not entitled to benefit this)


Can any one advice what to do!
