i have entered the US on an F1 visa for my grad studies at univ of southern california.

i have registered for my courses (enough for a full time student) and paid the tuition fee too .
i got an on-campus job at the university .

the office of international services in my uinv gave me a letter saying that i have secured a job.

i then went to the ssn office in LA and they sent me back ...

this is wat happened at the office ...

on the computer there was a column called issue date( i know this cause she showed me the computer screen ) ... and the lady typed in the date mention in point 5 of my I 20(see below) , the computer rejected it saying that the date cant be later than today .
the lady there ( a hot female ) asked me to come back after the date mentioned in my point 5 of my i-20.

the day i went to the ssn office ( today ) : july 26 , 2006

the dates mentioned in my I-20

point no 5 . the student is expected to report to the school no later than
08/14/2006 and complete his studeis no later than....

point no 10.
i-20 issue date is 03/16/2006

can someone explain the rules to me ... why cant i get an ssn ?
or was i sent back due to the ignorance of the computer operator at the ssn office ( i suspect that she confused the dates mentioned in points 5 and 10 )

If you have not started your classes yet, you will no be able to get a social security number...for sevis you are not a student yet...

see, you just got ur i-20 on march 06, the day the international student office at univ of southern calif will check ur registration is 8/2006, on that date you will be officially in the school... AFTER THAT DATE the ss office will be able to approve you restricted ss card.

The rule is... if you just land to the US in a F1 you "should" have enough money to support yourself... so your i-20 date blocks you from "be able" to work until you start your classes...

my 2 cents, just wait until you start your classes... then you will get ur restricted social with no problems...
