Urgent - Canceling GC process?

This is a weird question, but what happens if you stop processing on your Green Card? The next time you apply, will they have records (well, I'm sure they will), but will those records affect the processing/interview of the next time?

I have applied for a GC for my spouse and things seem to be moving pretty quickly - but, now, something has come up which has made us re-think his getting a GC just now. We would reapply after about 4-5 years.

From what I understand, submitting an I-130 is not the same as applying for a GC? I mean, I think your application for a GC isn't really started until you complete the Packets that they send you after approving your I-130? Is this true or did I misunderstand? If I cancel now, will they still have a record of us 'applying for a GC'?

Someone please answer! It's kind of urgent. We will be getting a Packet in a day or two, and we need to know if we are going to be continuing with the process or not. If we do decide to continue, I don't want things to be unnecessarily delayed for no reason.

I-130 is just to petition your spouse, GC application process doesn't start until you apply I-485, Adjustment of Status. I know my ex-husband applied I-130 (only) for me back in 1998-99, I remember I received notice a few times to continue the process, which I never did. I think after 3 years (I might be wrong about the years), it's considered abandoned. If you don't want to start the whole GC thing, just don't do it just yet, wait until you're ready. Cuz there might be a time limit to the I-130.

Thanks for the reply, pipitastro, but both my spouse and I are in Pakistan, and so we do not need to file an I-485 for him, or any other forms, just the I-130 and the G-325As. So, have we 'applied' for a GC yet or not? (officially, that is). Do you know anything about it in this case?

Not sure about Pakistan... I was in Indonesia at that time, that's why I never continued the process... also that was more than 6-7 years ago...things might have changed...

Thanks anyways, pipitastro. :)

Anyone else have any idea about this? A general sense of the situation (about 'applying' for the GC) would suffice.

i dunno if this is related to your case...but when i wanted to apply for a GC for my sister...they told me that she would not be able to come later as a student F-1...so i asked people if filing an I-130 actually begins her process to get green card (i thought it did not untill she actually signs a paper saying she wants to get it..like form DS-230 from the NVC)....but others mentioned that the I-130 could be viewed as a first step in her intention to immigrate here.
Anyways...they will have a record of it ...but if you have good reasons why you did not complete it...then i don't see why it could be a problem.

she appliead for the F-1...since she wanted to go to school first and wasn't sure about moving here for good. But they asked her wheter someone ever applied for a GC for her. So maybe they do consider the I-130 filing the first step.

There is a user in this forum...."pianoplayer"...he once had the exact answer for this issue.

So you never really filed the I-130 for her, then.. That's what I'm thinking - do they mean 'has anyone applied for you', or 'has anyone petitioned for you'? Are they the same or different?!

Anyhow, thanks. :) I will try and find out the thread you are talking about.

I can't find the DS-2019 for applying for a J-1 anywhere! All I can find is the Request Form for the DS-2019..

I only want it to see what kind of stuff is asked on it, just to help me with my decision..

Would anyone here happen to have a copy of the form?
