Update Status in US by going to Canada and back to US as a Canadian

Dear Experts,

Please help me on my question, this is my situation and question:

I have just quit a job in US, I was on H1B Visa when I was working. I am a Canadian, by law, I need to exit US since my H1B is not valid anymore. In August, I will become a student, so I plan to go to Canada and return to US with Canadian passport; my stay in Canada woill just be about a few hours. Hopefully this will fulfill the requirement. Will this work?

When the border official ask me the snoopy questions, I plan to tell them my plan.

Yes, but leave US ASAP. If you wait until August, you could be in trouble.
