Yes. They check with BCIS to verify your eligibility to legally work (i.e. at least EAD, not H1). They will pay you benefits pending verification, but will demand it back if you are found ineligible.
That is all I know. I do not know the consequences... there are conflicting opinions. Check with an attorney.
