Unemployment benefit

Hi, all

My friend just got his GC, but he'll lost his job next month. If he couldn't find a job, could he apply unemployment benefit? Is there any problem for future citizen?

i don't think so. i know there are some states that only allow citizens to collect unemployment benefits. however, if your state allows you to collect unemployment benefits, it shouldn't affect your naturalization 5 years down the road. The INS does not have linkages between its database and the database of state unemployment office. It only recenty started sharing information with the IRS only two years ago. And i don't recall reading anywhere that collecting unemployment will jeopardize one's citizenship application.

true but soc security tax and medicare is paid by the employee and an h1b cannot collect ss benefits although he's taxed for it. so just because an employer paid unemployment tax does not necessarily mean benefits are available to everybody.

I know that immigrants aren't eligible for food stamps anywhere in the country and that was a federal law passed in 1996 but unemployment benefits are left up to each state. I HEARD some southern states don't allow it but I could be proven wrong

Anyone can claim SS or medicare if one is eligible for it. Medicare and SS are post retirement benefits. Also one is required to earn wages for a specific period of time, for example to claim SS one has to have earned income (and paid SS taxes) for at least 10 years.

SS and medicare are not limited to LPRs or citizens.
