Hello,
I've been a PR from Nov 04 onwards. My company is announcing layoffs soon and I was thinking of applying for unemployment. Was wondering if this will have any adverse consequences if and when I apply for my citizenship. Any info greatly appreciated.
Regards.

Hi there!

In short: No, the fact that you might have collected public assistance will not affect your eligibility for naturalization later on. Good luck!

Best,
Nico

The simple answer is NO.

I asked my lawyer a while back and he said this:

Anything that you obtain legally (benefit or otherwise) cannot adversly impact your immigration status or citizenship application.

Your company pays unemployment insurance on your behalf so if you're fired or laid off you collect benefits.

same would be for social security benefits if you were poor.

Unless you obtain something illegally (which obviously is a crime) USCIS can never hold it against you.
