Undocumented alien and marriage

My boyfriend and I have been together for 3 years now, and are really hoping to get married sometime soon. I have some questions, though... Doesn't being together usually involve having shared bank accounts, pay stubs, a place to live, etc... the only way for him to get any of this, let alone keep a job, is to have a SSN... Which isn't good. How are you supposed to answer interview questions and provide proof of anything if it is fraudulent? Wouldn't the person get in trouble for identity theft or something?

Also, he was previously charged with forgery (got reduced from a class D felony to a misdemeanor and probation). How bad of an impact do you think that will have on our ability for him to get a gc? And how long does a person usually have to wait to start the application process after marriage?

I would never marry someone out of desperation... I love him to pieces, but this whole worrying over if he's gonna get deported sometime- and not driving- thing is really getting to me as well. When I called the immigration lawyer, she said that you have to be married for quite a while in order to even ASK to start the process or it will look like it is all a fraud? Well how long is long enough... I am planning on spending the rest of my life with him and can't do that if I don't know if he'll be in the same country as me?!!!

Thanks!!

Since you guys are together for a while, I don't think that you have to wait for very long to get it done.
Be advised that your BF will only be able to adjust status in US if he had a legal entry into US. Otherwise he have to face a 10 year bar to recieve any visa.

Are you a US citizen, and did he enter the US legally?

Unless both are true, forget about him getting a green card unless he's going to exit the US to wait out the 10-year ban.

And his conviction may disqualify him from a green card, depending on the specific details of it (you'll need to have an immigration lawyer review the court papers to determine that).
