By "work" do you mean a business trip where you are employed by a US corporation and only plan to do meetings, presentations, etc. in the UK for less than 90 days? If so, as a US Citizen you don't need a visa.
You'll definitely need a work permit/permanent resident status in order to seek employment in the UK. In many ways, their visa system is very similar to the US.
