Hi I would like to know if a U.S. Citizen can travel out of the USA for up to 5 year and back to U.S. with no problem. or there will be a problem?

Thanks alot.

You can live outside of the USA forever and keep your citizenship. Just make sure to file your taxes every year.

Thank you for the clarification. I am in the same situation.

I am a naturalized US Citizen since May 2006. I am living outside USA since May 2008. My relative who is a citizen since a long time told me that I have to visit USA every three years to keep the Naturalization alive. Is this true?

I am filing taxes every year. Any other formalities/process that I have to follow?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

There is no requirement to visit the US every few years. Once you are a citizen you stay one unless you commit any of the acts that could lead to losing your citizenship. However, this would have to be decided by a court, and the bar is fairly high:

As long as you file your taxes, you should be ok.

I am really shocked to hear that every US citizen have to pay taxes even if he is not living in USA. If he does not pay taxes then he is considered to be a US citizen. My question is why he pay taxes when he is earning from USA and not living in USA?

3) It is the U.S. federal law that for U.S. citizens, no matter where they live, their worldwide income is subject to the U.S. income tax. This applies both to the foreign-source income of U.S. citizens living in the U.S. and to the foreign-source income of U.S. citizens residing abroad.

However, for U.S. citizens residing abroad, a little over $90,000 of their foreign income is exempt from the U.S. income tax (the actual amount of the exemption changes every year).

For many (perhaps most) U.S. citizens living abroad their total annual income is actually less than $90,000, and they do not have to pay any U.S. income tax at all.
