Trouble with Visa at Port of Entry

I have a valid visa (of type H1B) in my passport with the previous employer information (that is my previous company name is mentioned). I was carrying my current employer I797 and other documents.

At the port of entry, the official told me that I cannot enter US with previous employer visa and current employer I797. I need to get a new visa with current employer information.

Finally, he agreed to let me in provided I apply for the new visa. My question to you all is, will St Louis give me new visa with current employer information while my previous visa is still valid for another year?

Please let me know.

Regards.

It seems the POE officer is confused.
See the info' below from H visa revalidation:State dept.
'If you changed employers and received a new I-797, Notice of Action, you may reenter the U.S. with a valid visa in the appropriate category and the valid I-797 from your new employer, even though the visa is annotated to reflect your former employer. The Visa Office will not revalidate a visa to reflect a change of employer unless the visa will expire in sixty days or less'.
