Trips Abroad and U.S.C.

Hello, this is my first posting on this forum. I am a GC holder
trying to get some facts on filing my N-400. I have a few questions about trips abroad. I live in Michigan and I, since becoming a LPR have made numerous short trips to Canada. I even went to school for a few years in Toronto.

1. How do I fill out part 7 of the N-400 where it asks for time spent abroad? I have a record of some of my trips but not all of them.

2. Do they have a computer record of all my trips? If so, is it possible to get a copy of them?

3. When I calculate the total number of days out of the U.S., what is the maximum when applying for U.S. citizenship?

I can do my best at estimations, but if they have a record, and compare their record to mine, and they don't match then at the interview I become a person of "bad moral character" because I lied on the application. I would definitely like to avoid this situation. Please advise, thanks in advance.

Hi Mich-Mike

1) Check out this thread (answer to question 2 about trips):

http://boards.immigrationportal.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=112295

2) I'm not sure if you can get a record. I have one stamp missing in my passport and I have contacted the airline directly to give me some sort of proof via passenger manifest or the like. JoeF also mentioned in a previous thread that proof such as itinerary, boarding passes, tickets, etc. will help so take those with you if you have them.

3) In the last 5 years you have to have been physically present in the United States for 30 months (2.5 years). So if your number of days spent outisde the US in the last 5 years adds up to more than 30 months you are not yet eligible. Also, any trips more than one year (even if you had a re-entry permit) make your eligibility void. For more information on eligibility, you should check out the eligibility worksheet at:

Also check out page 17-24 of the "Guide to Naturalization" available at the same URL.

Ratrat, thanks for the info. The one thing is about my trips is that they were via car through land based POE's so I have no proof really. Do you know if they track trips to Canada with your licence plate? I would like to have some proof especially with the consequences, but where do you get it? Thanks again.

I have many trips to Canada via road. The best thing to do is to fill out form with best of your memory as honestly as possible.

I doubt there is any place where you can call to get record. I doubt with road trips to Canada, they keep exact record as some time they just look at your card and on discretion of immigration officer you enter USA.
