our greencard applications were approved and passports were stamped in February 2005. We are still waiting for actual card to arrive. Now we are planning to visit canada by road (via Buffalo NY). Has anyone recently travelled to Canada by using I551 stamp instead of actual greencard? Is there any issue with such travel? Just wondering if canadian border person knows that I551 stamp is equivalent to greencard.

Please help.

Yes -- they understand PP stamp.

Here is a direct quote from the LA consulate's web page.
Permanent residents of the United States MUST present a valid Alien Registration Card (Green Card) or present a valid I-551 endorsement in their passport as proof of permanent resident status. Permanent residents of the United States DO NOT require a visa to enter Canada.
