Dear all,

Do i need to get a stamp on my pasport if I need to travel to Europe for vacation? I am worried that if I lose my gc (wallet) I might be stranded over there. What do you guys think? What chances to I have for getting a stamp in the Phila DO?

Skins!!

I don't believe the law that you need to carry your GC with you at all times extends to European countries ...:p

So if I were you I'd keep it with the passport! Problem solved, that's your "I-551 stamp" in plastic form with your passport.

USCIS are not going to give you an I-551 stamp if you have your actual GC readily available. Just don't loose it!

Alright, I guess I should stop whining.. and forget about making an appointment with USCIS.. but why are they so uptight with stamps anyways? Does anyone know? I see you are ready to remove your conditions in June 2009 lol.. so funny :)

Have you tried to get a stamp? Why wont they give it? I am just curious you know.. actually during my interview approval.. i tried to ask for a stamp.. but they told me the gc was coming out in 2 weeks.. so forget it... hmmm

I was told the same thing... they wouldn't give my wife the stamp in her passport as they said the GC would arrive within three weeks. The IO even stated that they took his stamp away and he wasn't able to do anything even if he wanted to.

NOt sure why - but I guess they are trying to avoid giving that stamp.

Probably for "security reasons" or some other such bull. While I can't give you a definitive reason, I just know they don't like giving out temporary I-551 stamps these days. If you have a legitimate need, they will stamp, but otherwise you are SOL.

A stamp is much easier to counterfeit than the actual green card, which has additional security features. So they simply don't want to open the flood gate as everyone would like to have a stamp in addition to their card.
