Travelling out of the USA without receipt of 485 - OK or Not ???

I am feeling a little confused as laws have changed post sep -11,
we have applied for I-140 in may and then applied for I-485 in october but did not get any receipt for I-485 ,there are about 3 yrs left on our H1 visa ..the question is can we go out of the US and come back safey without the receipt as on normal H1 travelling ?? or do we have to wait to get the I-485 receipt..is this
question asked at the airport ,can it be a issue ???Pls let me know URGENTLY ...

You can go on H1 Visa, if it is not expired and also make sure stamping is done. its not a prob but make sure to take with you Pay stubs and emplyer letter. no one knows at the airport that you have applied for GC.

I think u r looking when when when to go to India....
