I have filed Family based GC. I am in the US and I might me traveling after the interview but before I get the actual card. If the officer does not stamp my passport, is it acceptable to use AP - Travel document after the green card is approved but the physical card not yet received? OR do we need AP - Entry Permit?

My length of stay will NOT exceed 3 months.

Thanks!

We didn't apply for AP. However, from what I read from most people the officer usually takes your EAD, AP and I-94. If you are able to show there is cause to travel shortly after the interview the officer might allow you to keep your AP or might stamp your passport if they have already approved your case. However, our case would of not been practical to get a stamp since the officer said she was going to write a recommendation of approval to her supervisor, so technically we where not approved until after we left.

How soon after the interview do you need to travel? The card usually takes about 2 weeks to come to you in the mail.

Yes you can use the AP to travel after GC approval if you haven't received the card or I-551 stamp yet and the AP was applied for and approved while you were in the US. So hold on to your AP at the interview and don't give it to them unless you get them to agree to stamp your passport right then and there.

That's if they make the final decision to approve it right there in the interview, or a day or two after. If the case needs additional review, it could take weeks or months until the approval is finalized and the card is delivered.
