travelling multiple times on AP?

My spouse will be travelling outside country next month and again after couple of months. I have heard that at the port of entry the officer and the airlines keeps the AP copies?

How can she travel again if she has to give the copies of AP? Can she request to keep the copies so that she can travel again or we have to get another copy of AP?

There are 3 copies of the AP (two with photo).... in my case the INS officer kept one original with photo and stamped the other original with photo and handed it back to me for future travel... in my wife's case he stamped both photo originals and handed both of them back to her (we arrived in to the country at different airports at different times)..
