travelling by AP

Could anybody let me know what kinds of documents I need to carry besides AP when travelling outside of USA? Thanks!

It is always better to carry your I-485 recipt notices if H1 validity in the passport has already expired. I faced the same situation, when I recently visited India. She refused to issue boarding pass (United Airlines to Frankfurt) since my Visa stamped in passport has expired. Then I gave her the I-485 receipts, she confirmed with her boss whether I-485 receipts can be considered for a legal immigrant status.
Though it took half an hour at counter, finally I got the boarding pass.

Vijguy,

This is a good piece of information for the people who are
planning to travel on AP. Thank you for sharing the info!

That's strange

If this happened on your outbound journey to India, I wonder why she refused to issue a boarding pass (I presume your home country is India and you hold a valid Indian passport). I didnt face any such issues when I flew Luft a couple of years ago with an expired F1 stamp and an approved H1B paper. I can understand if it happened in India when you try to board without proper visa stamp on your passport.
Thanks for the info, anyhow.

I had the same experience as vijguy

I had the same experience as vijguy but with Continental Airlines so ask Airline people to read words in the AP carefully.

My experience

I flew by Air india from mumbai couple of weeks back and there was no problem. At the counter they looked at the copy of the AP which i showed and gave the boarding pass. but i had to give a copy of the AP at the security clearance gate to the airline staff.

Hope this helps

Greenkaagaj & GC12002

Greenkaagaj,
Did they want you to turn-in one of the three pages of the AP document? What if you have to travel again using AP? Do you have to get another one?

GC12002,
My point is, why do the airlines give a damn about whether or not you'd be able to come back to the US? Their duties are limited to assisting with ticketting, issue boarding passes and, to some extent, alert authoritieis about suspicious looking passengers. They are not qualified to review the various immigration documents. I can understand if they do it in India because if you are refused entry into the US upon arrival, the national carrier has to bear the cost of taking you back home. Why the heck would UA or Continental give a damn that too on the outbound journey from USA? They shouldnt!

Original to Airlines

I recently travelled with AP, at frankfurt(to DC) after seeing the my passport is expired, they were satisfied with my EAD. They didnot ask for 485 receipt. Also, they took one original of AP on which there was no PHOTO. On that copy at the bottom it says "To the transportation line". You will not see this comment on other copies with the PHOTO. At the port of entry in DC, they took the AP copy, the one with the photo, stamped on it and gave it back to me. At frankfurt i tried to argue with the airlines saying you should not take any original copy of AP, but they showed me the comment on the copy "to the transportation line" and took it. In DC the immigration sent me for the secondary check where they took my documents and gave it back to me in 15 minutes, since my entry is valid.

Hope this helps.

Re: Original to Airlines

Hi all!
I was just checking my AP docs in prep. of my trip to India in a couple of days. My AP docs were issued on the 21st of Jan, 2003. I have three pages and all the pages have my picture digitally imprinted on them and I don't see a page that has any indication of handing over to the transportation airline. Is this the norm these days or has there been a change recently?

Thanks

EU Airlines insist for I-485 receipts

In my case I was travelling to India via Frankfurt. Since majority of European countries requires Transit visa's (Even if it is layover), they look for valid documentation. US citizens, GreenCard Holders and Persons with valid US visas are exempt for the Transit Visa requirements. That is the reason why they look at first valid US Visa in the passport for all H1 candidates. If Visa stamped in passport gets expired, then European Airlines don't issue Boarding passes unless you show some proof of valid status such as I-485 receipts. Thst's what exactly happend in my case.

Hope this clarifies all doubts...

Just returned using AP

Hi Guys:

I just returned to PHL a couple of hours back using AP. I travelled by BA from BOM. I have a valid H-1 stamp in my passport so mostly people were just looking at that, even though I no longer work for that company and I'm a derivative 485 applicant. When I tried to show them my AP they seemed satisfied with that H-1 stamp. Getting a boarding pass at BOM was very straightforward. At LHR they checked my AP before boarding. Immigration at PHL was a breeze. I was ready with all relevant supporting papers (my 485 Receipt Notice copy, EAD, copy of spouse's 485 Receipt Notice, previous H-1/H-4 Approval Notices, Marriage Certificate, Birth Certificate, etc.) but all they asked was the original AP (3 copies, airline didn't take any copy). I was done in 10 minutes flat. Hope that helps.
