Once a person receives the green card can they travel with the passport from the home country or do they need US passport to travel?
Can they apply for passport?
And can they apply for citizenship before they start the process of removing conditions on the GC?
And what if name is different on GC from the passport from home country.
For example maiden name on Passport and Married name on Green Card.
I realize these questions are basic but i dont want to take any chances.

Not only do you not need a US passport, but you can't get one either. Your status currently is LPR and it will be another 2 yrs and 9 months before you can apply for the citizenship. It will be after you have received your citizenship that you will be able to apply for the US Passport.

As for removing the conditions - you must apply for removal of conditions (by filing I-751) after 1 year and 9 months from the date of the approval of your AOS. The conditional GC that you have is good only for 2 years from the date of approval (It should have an expiry date - pl chk) so you must apply for removal of conditions before that... once you file I-751, you get an extension for one year, as the approval process is supposed to complete within one year. However (as I have read) the removal of conditions process often takes more than an year and in that case you don't have to wait for the conditions to be removed to file for citizenship. Whether the conditions have been removed or not, you can still file for citizenship after 2 yrs and 9 months from the date of approval of your AOS.

Hope this helps.

You may want to get a new passport from your country of citizenship if it still has your maiden name. I think you are expected to keep the information in your passport current.

Interestingly enough, my wife tried to get a new passport, license, etc. in Canada with her new marriage name, and Canada refused. Since sometime in the 70's she was told, they stopped changing the married persons last name.

The wifes keep their name, their children take the fathers last name, or a combo-both last name.

I find the whole thing weird, but wth can ya do :)

Here in the US, she signs everything with her new marriage name, in fact on ALL the uscis forms we used her new marriage name, so when she gets her AP, EAD, GC, etc, they will have the name she wants to use. The passport she has still has here maiden name on it, and none of our forms were kicked back for it.

Good day eh !
