My I-94 / H1-B visa expired and an application for extension of my status (I-129) has been filed with USCIS.
I sent a fax to CBP asking whether I can travel to Puerto Rico. They sent a fax back stating that as long as I maintain my legal status in the US and does not leave the country I will be able to return to the mainland US. I just have to show my passport, original I-94/visa and the receipt notice form USCIS. The same applies to Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa.
