Traveling overseas while OCI application is pending

My wife is currently in India on PIO and just applied for OCI in Mumbai FRRO this week. She has been in India since Dec 1, 2008. She might have to travel back to US in early June, after her 180 days are up. Does she need to register separately with FRRO in this case, as I am assuming that OCI application would not be approved that quickly? Do you think there would be problems at the immigration in Mumbai airport because she hasn't registered separately and will be leaving India after 180 days?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

To be on the good side of authorities she should register before her 180 days are up.

Yes. The registration requirements are waived only after approval of OCI.
