Traveling after filing 485

My H1-B is expiring in June 2003. Once I file for I-140/485 can I travel(international) freely (without AP) until my H1-B expires. Somebody had mentioned that once I apply for I-140/485 and leave the country I won't be on H1-B anymore. Is that true?

My H1 expires in march 2003.
I filed for my 485 on Oct 29( RD), left to india in first week Nov, got FP notice in First week Dec, came back to US on 13th Dec.
No problems. I just used my H1B Visa to get back. I don't even have a 485 receipt notice yet
