travel without ap- please help from experts

hi, my husband and i have won the dv lottery and our numbers just came up for april 2005. we are ready to send all the paperwor i-485 etc. BUT... I have urgent need to travel towards the end of april for 3 weeks. I think there's no way my AP is going to be approved by then. My questions is : can I leave the US and wait for the AP to come and have it sent to me overseas, and then reenter with it? I have tried to call the 800 number, and people are pretty clueless there, I have received three different responses from 3 people... Another possibility, should I maybe not apply for the AP and just travel and come back with my J2 visa which will still be valid? is my J visa cancelled once i send in the I-485?
please please help me , you knowledgable people, should I take my chances and travel, even if I dont have the AP? can I rely on my J2?

If you travel without an approved AP, your AP and I-485 are both considered abandoned and you may not be allowed re-enter. I am not sure if after filing I-485 J2 remains in J2-status or in AOS. The best thing will be to travel in valid J2 status and File your I-485 after coming back.
