I graduated in May 2005 and have OPT work authorization. In addition, I have also received H1B work authorization (starting Oct 2005). I have an F1 visa that is valid to May 2006 which I obtained using my OPT authorization. My understanding is that there are tax advantages of maintaining the OPT status as I do not pay social security taxes while I am a student.
I plan to travel out of the US in Dec 2005 and would like to know if it will be possible to re-enter the US as an OPT student or if I will need to change my status to H1-B at that point.
I would appreciate any advice on this.
