Hello,

I’m in the process of applying for my US Citizenship soon. I have a question on the traveling.

1) Once I take the oath and granted my Certificate of Naturalization. If I need to travel to India soon without my US passport will that be an issue. If not, what steps, actions needs to be taken.

I’m sorry if this question is already answered. If so please direct me to the appropriate thread / posting.

Thanks for your help,

Jagadish

You need a passport to travel. Unless you have another country's passport to enter India, how will you get into India? Even if you do get in by some miracle, you probably won't be able to leave without a passport.

If you are in so much hurry, you can perhaps call the customer service no for Passports and schedule an advance appt (which is only 14 days in advance) and get the passport on the same day. And on the next day, you can go the Indian consulate
and get the 5/10 yr multiple entry visa.. Now if your ""soon" is more than 2 days,
then I don't think you have a problem..

I haven't heard anyone travelling to India from US without a passport ::::)

You need a passport and a visa to be able to travel to India. You cannot travel only with the naturalization certificate to india. Right now, you can travel with the naturalization certificate to Canada, Mexico, and may be some Carribean Islands.

After the oath once you have the naturalization certificate, you can get the US passport in even 1 day. After that if you can go to the Indian Consulate in person, you can get the tourist visa on the same day.

On the side note, don't even think about entering India with an Indian passport after you have taken the oath. You may be able to enter India, but won't be able to leave India, as you won't have a green card or a visa to travel. Besides, this will get you in trouble in India too!

During the oath for my wife, the person conducting the oath announced that starting 2006 the law has changed and you'd need a passport to travel to canada, mexico and the islands as well. Earlier you could travel to these countires without the US passport, but starting 2006 US citizens are required to carry their passport while travelling to these countries.

I went to mexico this month. When I returned by air, I saw a lady entered using her birth certificate. I heard about that requirement change, but seems it has not fully in effect yet.

I would not do that. You need your passport. Now a days your passport ic checked even before you leave US. You can get the passport in 2-3 days (even 1 day if you pay for it) as long as you have confirmed air tickets to travel within 14 days.

And BTW - You will also need the Indian visa like hte other poster said. I wouldn't use my old Indian passport as you are a US citizen not Indian citizen (you have to apply for that dual citizenship things, isn't it)
