Hello All, I am being assigned to a project in Canada and it is a long term project it could go more than a year time. My green card is through my marriage to an american citizen and I have to remove the condition and switch to permanent green card by the end of this year, I have the following questions about my situation,

1. I am aware that being out of U.S for more than 6 months could cause problems during naturalization, but will it affect the removal of condition towards the end of this year?

2. I am maintaining my residency in the U.S, i.e I am still being paid in USD, will be filing my taxes in U.S for the year 2008. Can I make a brief visit back to U.S before the end of 6 months stay for a while and then go back to my work in Canada? How would this affect my naturalization? ( Apart from my taxes I dont have anything to show continuous residency like a house or any other property)

Any insights to clarify my doubts is sincerely appreciated and thanks all.

You will need to show that you plan to maintain residency in America..paying taxes is one way, having a valid address if possible in the states - i.e. where all your mail goes. Bank accounts still open and used. Is your wife staying or going with you? If she is staying in the US - use that as your address of residence.

Also, you will need to fill out the I-131 form for a re-entry permit if you plan to travel abroad for that long. As long as you get prior approval it should be ok. Your reason is one that is not usually considered suspect.
