Travel to Canada

I just checked out the Consulate of Canada website, it states that visa applicants must have a valid passport that valid for at least 6 months and with at least one blank page. Will that be a problem if my Refugee Travel Document does not meet the 6 months requirement?

On the Visa application form, it asks for Citizenship? What the answer should be? Should I answer as "stateless", "US Asylee", or the country who issued me my national passport?

How long will it take to process the VISA application? The website indicates that it only take one day, but I just don't know if the one day processing time applies to asylee as well.

Is any one willing to share their experience at the custom both in Canada and US?

If you visit the consulate in person then the visa processing takes one day. Make sure you have all supporting documents that will show your ties to US.

E.g.

Pay stubs (proof of job)
Bank statements for last 3 months

As far as citizenship is concerned. You are still the citizen of the country that issued you your national passport.

Everytime I have applied for Canadian Visa I had more almost 10 -11 months when I applied for Canadian visa. I don't know if they will issue a visa when RTD expiry is less than 6 months.

Best of luck ...

Rasylee,

Thanks for the info.

Since the Refugee travel document is only valid for a year, and all these Visa issues, and some other requirements imposed by different countries, I just feel like traveling outside the US can become a burden to asylees.

Travelling is supposed to be fun, but I just don't feel that way any more due to the all crazy procedures.

Do you know if I can apply for another Travel Document before my current RTD is expired? I saw an article mentioned on the INS website that Asylees can not apply for a new RTD until the old one is actually expired. Is this correct?

Thanks,
Chee

cchong,

I am not sure what the law is regarding applying for a new RTD while your previous RTD is not expired. My general understanding will be though that it may not be permitted.

I do share your concerns about the validity period of RTD and general hassels surrounding it. I think RTD is provided to asylees as "Use it per need basis". What I mean is that RTD is probably not viewed as a replacement of a National Passport. Theoretically our current status is just a temporary status and thus theoretically again there is no need to issue ASYLEES a document that will facilitate their traveling.

Without dwelling too much on the above topic. How I have gotten around this particular issue of applying for a new RTD while previous is still valid by Applying for the RTD and in where it asks for the details on the previously issued RTD, I will provide date of issue and then in the other column state that I have misplaced it at home. It has usually done the trick.

well...i used to renew my visa and there were only 4 months left on my RTD, so they gave me a 3 months visa.
so there is no problem!!
