travel overseas then got laid off

I am currently on H1B but I do have EAD/AP. I am going on a long travel. However, I am worried if I can still use the AP or H1 to enter US if I get laid off during the time I am traveling overseas?

Also anyone knows how soon I should find the new employer to use AC21, after being laid off?

I believe you r safe to enter if u have AP..having current H1 also helps.
