Well, couple of guys from my project left to India. It seems that they ask you to open the bags to check in and out.
They had tough time to re-organize the bags. So If you carry less than what the bags hold, it will be easy to re-stuff.
Also they ask questions on PERFUMES, METALS if you carry more than one.
All the airlines are strict in allowed WEIGHT to carry. Even 1 pound more than normal, they are asking to remove the contents.
BASICALLY do not carry more than suggested weights + do not carry more electronics stuff as even you pass here, passing customs is a horrible thing.
One guy took used LAPTOP and they charged 9000 Rs (in Bombay) even though one LAPTOP is allowed as defined by indian customs.

I did travel to Canada 2 weeks back
I was little bit tensed as my I-94 was 150 day "Out of status" and I also expected delays at border crossing near niagara - but that was not the case. I was just asked couple of questions and they just saw my Passport thats it and I was inside Canada within 10 mts. While reentering US, there was traffic as it was Sunday afternoon, but again no problem , they just asked my Passport and issued a new I-94. I had taken lot of extra documents to support, just in case.
