Travel agent rip off, How much to change date on tickets?

Mumbai consulate promised me date in first week of Jan after confirming twice so I purchased tickets. Now I learnt that my int date is Jan 22. I want to get my tickets changed and my agent said it will cost me $275 per person to change the date or $300 per person to cancel it altogether.
Is he ripping me off? Please advise. What should it cost?

Last tiem when I postpone my tickets my ....

Travel agent charge me 120 bucks. It was a year ago check with other agents and it also depends on what type of ticket u have.
 
it is around 250 dollars to change or chancel.

Depending on the cost of the ticket , it varies .
But I am sure it was $250 , for a ticket worth $1400.

As far as I know the rate to change the tickets to other date is $150.00 only. I had asked the TA before buying tickets.
Two TA had confirmed this.

You have to find out about the type of ticket agent booked for you and then go to website of airline and read about it or call them.
I know of a case in which it cost $270 to change

If you are still not satisfied, just take the current tkt from the agent, and then call airline directly and change them yourself.
 
MJ1, An agent can charge only Airlines fee. Read the Airlines policy on website.

Do not pay a penny extra than mentioned on Airline policy. Most Airlines charge 150-200 bucks. Good Luck.

Thanks for your help. I will find out the type of ticket and then ask the airline.
Superman, hope things are going well. Chennai guys are lucky, no PCC required. My case was actually assigned by NVC to Chennai and I would have got a December interview at Chennai had I not changed the consulate. How I wish now I had stayed with Chennai.

There are probably 3 fees that could make up this charge:

- airlines have a set fee for these changes -- check their website
- depending on the fare class of your ticket, you may have to pay a higher fare if you change the dates / times of travel to a time where the fare is higher
- some agencies also charge a service fee to issue and / or make changes to tickets -- they now get very little (or no) commission for issuing tickets, and certainly don\'t make any money from changes like this. Service doesn\'t come free nowadays.

Chennai CPers whose cases were transfered from NVC on 10/15; 10/22 did not make it to Chennai. Mine was transfered on 10/29. I think yours was 10/15. Lot of our freinds are suffering for this and their Interviews were cancelled for Jan. and will not be scheduled until they receive their files from NVC. NVC would not send until 90 days window is completed and Chennai request it. I don\'t know what is going to happend for them. So, you are better of with Mumbai. Atleast you got conformed Interview Date in Jan. Don\'t worry about PCC too much. Try your best. Consulates don\'t have the decritionary powers to reject a case for not having a document that was not informed to the applicant before the Interview in a reasonable ammount of time. I think they will implement some time real soon but can not do this right away for Jan. Good Luck.
