transition from J to F visa

I have a J1 visa valid through October 2010.

This June I plan to start a PhD in the US and I will need to switch to a F1 visa.

How does it work:
-Do I have to wait for the J1 visa to expire?
Do I have to cancel the J1?
Or is there a way I can transition from J to F?
