Transit visa

My family who are derivative applicants with AP document are going to India (From Chicago to Chennai) by Air India flight. The stop over for the flight is at Frankfurt, Germany. Do we need to have a Transit Visa. Please advise who are having similar experiance. Thanks for your time and I appreciate your inputs.

Thanks HHK. My travel agent did contact Air India. They suggest to get the transit visa.
